Purpose of SEO

Most bloggers who have been doing SEO surely understands why they have to do so. But for newbies, I just want to share how I understand Search Engine Optimization.

The target in doing SEO is to put your blog on first page of search engines on a specific keyword. Most of search engine users only check the first page of results and doesn't bother checking the next page. When that happens, there's higher possibility that you'll gain more visitors thus increasing your site's impressions (in terms of Adsense) and a higher chance of your visitors clicking your Adsense ads and increasing your earnings.

However, the search results can change. If you see your site on the first page, that doesn't mean it will permanently be on the first page. That is why SEO is an on-going project. It's not enough for you to work on your site's SEO for just a couple of weeks or months. It's something that you have to keep doing for as long as you want to earn from your site ;)

Search Engine Optimization is not an easy feat. There are different techniques available and there are new ones being created. Not all techniques work for everyone. So you have to find out what will work for you and your site.

Free Google Tools

Google has provided us with different services and most of them are useful tools for web developers. These are some of the free tools you might find useful:

Google Adwords: Keyword Tool - this is what some, if not most, bloggers use to determine the right keywords to use for their articles.

Google Trends - to find out the trending topics in Google. You can use this the same way as you use other sites' trending topics as stated in this post.

Google Webmaster Tool - helps in finding any problems your site might have or which pages are indexed in Google.

Picasa - image hosting. You have an option to download and install their software or upload it from the web version.

Blogger - blog platform/hosting site. (This site, along with 6 other blogs, are hosted in Blogger).

Tag Clouds

Most bloggers write something about current events. Why not? Especially if it's a global concern, it will definitely be a hit. But is it enough to just write anything down?

Aside from writing quality content about the earthquakes and tsunamis going on around the world, another step to getting people to read it is by choosing the appropriate tags/keywords.

I'm not really a fan of keyword tools other bloggers use because I'm too dumb to understand whatever result they show but I know it's not enough to just write some "relevant tags" without knowing for sure if they are really relevant. So I turn to social bookmarking/networking sites instead. Their tag clouds are a big help. Here's examples from twitter and yahoo.

Twitter Trends

Yahoo Trending Topics
You don't have to limit yourself to these two. There are a lot of social bookmarking sites out there that most bloggers are not aware of. But that will be another story ;) Subscribe to my feed to get more SEO techniques.

Optimize your Blog Post Title Part II

Part I: Permalinks

For this post, I'll talk about the Post Title. Most of the time, the default structure of a single post page's title is "Blog Title followed with Post Title". This means that whenever your site shows up in search engine, the first thing that other people see is your Blog Title. If you notice, Google tend to cut off the title of the post and end it with three dots [...]. I, for one, always choose the page/site which shows the keyword I typed in the search box on their blog title. It doesn't really help if you have a long post title and the keyword they are looking for is at the end of it.

So what we really want is for the Post Title to show up first before the blog title. It's pretty automated to adjust it in Wordpress. All you need to do is install the All in One SEO pack plugin, enable it and make sure that the post and page title format shows %post_title% | %blog_title% {or you can change "|" into a colon or a dash but other than that, don't change anything else}.

For Blogger, from your dashboard, go to Design > Edit HTML then look for this code
    <b:include data='blog' name='all-head-content'/>

It's usually just above the first tag. Below that code, put in:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;index&quot;'>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> | <data:blog.title/></title>
Once again, you can change "|" into a colon or a dash.

Optimize your Blog Post Title Part I

SEO is really tricky especially for newbies. There are several techniques that, as I repeatedly mention in this blog, might work for one but not for another.  One thing that a blogger can do though is optimize all of his/her blog's elements including the Single Post Page. Single post page is usually one of the most neglected elements. Although it does not weigh as much as quality content, but it can still help bring in traffic.

Let's start with the permalink. Permalinks are basically the URL of a specific post, categories and other pages. We should choose our permalink the same way that we choose our domain name - with the target keyword.

Before I proceed with how I do it in my WP blog, let me just warn you about one thing. Permalinks are indexed in Google and if you change it without informing Google, you'll lose all those old inbound links.

With that being said, you do have an option to change your old permalinks in Wordpress but make sure that you have a redirection plugin installed to redirect your visitors who are using your old permalinks to the new one or update your .htaccess file. Personally, I did both. I updated .htaccess file and installed Redirect Old Slugs plugin.

To change the permalink settings, go to Settings>Permalinks and then you can choose custom settings. If you haven't changed .htaccess permission settings, then it should still be unwritable. You have to access your root folder and edit it from there. Make sure you copy everything in the box below the "Save Changes" button and put it in your .htaccess file. If you don't have one, you can create it yourself. Read more about it from here.

If you want to change your permalink after you publish your post, you can edit it from the button below your post title box.

If you blog is hosted in Blogger though, you can set your permalinks first by putting a title without stop words, publish it then edit it again to post your title.

Moved Posts

I'm cleaning my blogs and organizing them and if you noticed I've already moved some of my posts to The Peregrinator. Thanks to all the comments. I'm trying my best to visit back.

I'm really hoping I could keep this up. Right now, I'm trying to adjust again and taking it one step at a time.I'm just so glad for the internet for giving me things to take my mind off the loneliness. So far, I've been busy with Linkworth and Microworkers. After a week, I reached the minimum payout for this month in Linkworth and I've also requested for the pin from Microworkers. Aside from those two, I'm busy 'trying' to make layouts for multiply, wordpress and blogger blogs. I'm already on my second layout for multiply but still starting with WP and Blogger although I'm almost done with both. All updates about the layouts will be posted in The Peregrinator. I'm trying to keep this as my earning site.

If you love writing/blogging and looking for sideline, visit those two sites I posted above. If you are looking for blog contests, we have new posts at Events, Contests and Freebies. Good Luck!

Web Design Proposal

More and more people are venturing to online business but most of these do not have any idea how to create a website nor do they have any idea on how to make it attract viewers. That's why most of them hire web designers to do it for them. But there are a lot of web designers nowadays which makes it difficult to compete if you are just starting.

In order to stand out, there are things you need to do in order to impress your clients. Your web design proposal should look professional. And as time is really important for these businessmen, you should be able to create an effective proposal in just a small amount of time. You can always do it the way you're used to or get one of those web design proposal templates which is much easier and will help you save time and money.

Blog Reviews

If you notice, one of the criteria in joining most blog contests is to write a blog review. I've requested to have my blog reviewed before so I'll know what most visitors notice in my sites and at the same time see if there is anything that I need to improve on. I love getting suggestions from other Bloggers since most of them know what a website needs in order to attract more readers. At least, when I finally decide to submit my blog to a blog directory, I've already made adjustment to my site and I can hope that readers will keep coming back.

New Adsense

I seldom login to my adsense account but when I logged in this morning, this screen greeted me:

I still haven't explored everything yet but it looks promising. Hopefully, this will help us understand Adsense and the reports it generates even more which in turn will help us understand how to maximize our adsense earnings.

What do you think of the new adsense? Has anyone seen any problem that might arise with the new interface?

Website Templates

The first thing that a visitor usually notices in a website is the layout. Its what gives the first impression to its readers.

If you own a business and wants to bring it online, the first impression that you would want people to have when they visit your website is "professional". In that case, you might want to invest on professional website templates. You can choose from a list of templates or you can opt to have one custom designed for you. In any case, your template should be able to convey to your visitors that the people behind that website are professionals who means real business.
